FreeCell Streak Hits 100!

March 05, 2006

TISBURY, MASS. 1:50 p.m. EST -- Susanna J. Sturgis just logged in her 100th consecutive win at FreeCell, a double-deck computer solitaire. This is only the second time she has reached the century mark at the game. "My personal best is 105," she says, brandishing the printout that confirms her claim. "My current goal is 106. After that -- well, my brother John says he got to 139 a few years ago, so 140 would be nice too. I take it one game at a time."

Sturgis, 54, is a full-time editor and part-time horsesitter.

Asked what advice she has for FreeCell hopefuls who aspire to similar success, Sturgis said, "Never play when you're angry, tired, tipsy, or too rushed to concentrate."

FreeCell is widely condemned for its addictive qualities and its time-wasting potential. Sturgis concedes that some people do become so obsessed with the game that their work and personal lives suffer. "The same could be said of reading newspapers or working out," she says. "People can mess their lives up in any number of ways. Balance is the key."

Sturgis believes that FreeCell can teach valuable skills, such as focus, patience, spatial relationships, and consideration of consequences. "When you're playing a tough game of FreeCell, if you don't look ahead, you're dead," she says.
