Yet Another Question About Guys

July 27, 2005

This proofreading job just referred to a writer who had "run around nations in pursuit of girls." This is what I want to know: What are guys -- men, boys, whatever -- seeking when they go in pursuit of girls (women, whatever)? It's almost certainly more than mere sex, or bragging rights, or lying rights. What is it?

This is what I'm afraid I'll get terribly wrong when I try to write about guys. How can the devoted pursuit of "girls" coexist with such cluenessness about -- even contempt for -- individual real-life female people?

I've seen it through so many women's eyes, and they mostly don't get it either. What are men chasing when they chase women?
