Remembering Rhodry

December 17, 2009

Today was Rhodry's birthday. Here's what he looked like when he was about three weeks old (that's him on the left):

Yesterday, on our early morning walk, Travvy swerved off the path. Before I knew what he was up to, he'd taken possession of what I think was a deer stomach. It was the right shape, it was draped with membranes, and it was stuffed with foragey-looking stuff. I wondered if it might be a haggis sushi swiped from someone's dinner table, but Robert Burns's birthday isn't till January 25 and that's the only time haggis is generally served in these parts. Getting it away from Travvy was a challenge. No way was I going to play tug with it, and nothing I had in my bait bag persuaded Travvy that dropping it was a smart move. I did see the tug game going on in his head: My stomach! vs. "Drop it!" Finally he relinquished his grip enough for me to haul him away from his prize.

Rhodry would have been proud.
