On the AirJuly 03, 2006 The great thing about radio is that you don't have to dress up, which is good because by the time I'd ridden, helped close at my barn, tended to three horses and two dogs at a single-day gig, and rushed to get home by the witching hour, I was a sweaty mess. I sounded reasonably cool, calm, and collected, however, albeit a bit impish, but I can't help that; it's me. The show, The World of Publishing, is broadcast via the Internet from North Carolina. The host is Jeannette Cézanne, a fellow editor and writer whom I met through Copyediting-L. She's in Manchester, N.H. We've never met in person; hell, before tonight we'd never heard each other's voices -- and then the connection was by way of North Carolina. Technology really does rock. Now I'm even more determined to get myself a high-speed Internet connection. I'm radio-dependent, but the only station within listening range that I can bear to listen to is WUMB-FM. (If you love acoustic and roots music and have one of those high-speed thingies, you can listen too: go to www.wumb.org and push the right buttons. Also turn on your speakers. I keep forgetting that part.) I'd love to be able to listen to musical and writerly stuff from Australia and Britain and down south and up north . . . We talked about what editing is, different kinds of editing, how I became an editor (it's true: when I got my first editor job in 1979, I barely knew what an editor was); about how I got into fantasy/science fiction and the mingling of writers and readers that goes on at "cons"; about how having a horse helped me write my novel. I hope Rhodry doesn't feel slighted; I did manage to say that the only character in The Mud of the Place who has a real-life counterpart is Rhodry the Malamutt -- Rhodry Malamutt who doesn't like fireworks, which is why I rushed him inside before the show started at 8 p.m.: if the boom-booms started, I didn't want to have to excuse myself and sprint down the stairs to answer the scratch-scratch at the front door. Jeannette says it went well; like me, she thinks we could have gone on for hours. Come back in the fall? she said. Twist my arm! said I.
