Return of the Undead
May 08, 2006
All this rhapsodizing about the pinkletinks that trill in the spring, the flowers that bloom, the grass that greens, the horses that shed, and the days that stretch has plainly waked a malign force in the universe. Something else is coming back, and that something is the Loathsome One, the copyediting of which I compared to spreading mocha butter-cream frosting on the manure pile.
It seems that while I was spreading frosting the author and the editor were toiling on the pile, rewriting significant chunks of it. Production editor e-mailed me: "Please call." I dialed, she answered, we talked; upshot is that the revised manuscript will arrive on Friday, I have to send it back Monday, and I get several bucks an hour more than the usual rate. What the hell, why not.
I might have to send it back with a stake through its heart. Avert, avert!
Other than that, it was a pretty good day. Tomorrow I'm driving to Portsmouth for Lisa's memorial service: deliver Rhodry to day care (aka the barn) no later than 6:15, off on the 7 a.m. ferry, service at 1, drop by the reception for at least a little while, leave in time to make the 8:30 home. Till then!
