Anniversary
October 17, 2005
Allie arrived on Martha's Vineyard exactly six years ago today, having survived a seven-hour trip from her home farm then a four-day layover at a Morgan farm north of Boston until a local hauler could bring her the rest of the way. She was a helluva good sport about it all. A few days later she started acting lethargic and running a fever that spiked as high as 105. Like I wasn't already thinking I'd taken leave of my senses, committing myself to this 3 1/2-year-old who had just left behind the only world she knew? We thought it might be Lyme or some other tick-borne disease, but in retrospect my best guess is shipping fever, because she hasn't been sick a day since.
Happy anniversary, my spunky Allie punkster. Whether it was beginner's luck or a match made in horse heaven, I couldn't have done better.
